Species: Terraforma locomotus
Common Forms: Roamrock (mobile) / Keystone (anchored)
Habitat: Alpine ridges and rocky shelves
Region of Gearlandia: The Anchorlands
Behavior: Mild-mannered and nomadic-movers, Roamrocks quietly traverse the rugged landscapes. When the time is right, they pause, sit, and “set,” seamlessly merging into their surroundings to become immovable Keystone anchors.
Common Names & Forms:
Roamrocks- when the creature is in motion, walking across terrain. Mobile anchor, mysterious, semi-sentient.
Keystone- when it melds into the earth, forming a stable, reliable anchor point. Timeless, architectural, strong.
Different traits and personalities: All are friends and some are nuts!
Biggs the Boulder (larger Roamrocks aka BFRs)
Crags, Jugs, and Buckets (mid-size, mountain dwellers)
Flakes and Pebbs (smaller Roamrocks)
Hunky Hold and Chickenhead (commonly found mid-face or when “high-help” is needed)
Chossy-boy (Careful! Chossy-boy means well but tends to crumble when under pressure.)
Old Gneiss Guy (aged, coarse, and banded wrinkles.)
Mick (a swift rolling stone that rarely settles and gathers no moss.)
Backstory:
In the rugged expanse of the Anchorlands, the terrain is alpine, prominent and sometimes sharp. There are aged ridges, glacier-scored valleys, and floating granite shelves that drift across celestial skies. The northern region of Gearlandia is a high-ground sanctuary and there live the watchful guardians: the Roamrocks
These ancient creatures are part animate, part stone. Each one is a walking, mumbling mass of boulder with stubby feet, mossy backs, and a nose for bomber placements. They roam quietly, rarely speaking, but can be coaxed to sit and “set” when the terrain calls for it. Once still, they meld into the earth, locking into the terrain with such force that they become immovable anchors ideal for belays, redirects, or big-wall hauls.
Their personalities range from sleepy and stoic to surprisingly sassy. The little ones (Pebbs) are curious and quick to help. The big ones (Biggs) may need more convincing and sometimes require a mossy backscratch.
Signature Move:
The Metamorph- A subtle but powerfully strong rumble begins when active camming engages and they fully transition from being a Roamrock to a Keystone. They seamlessly blend with the landscape and become an unshakable rigging point.
Gearhead Connection:
While many Keystones appear to camouflage or indistinguishable from ordinary rocks, Gearheads who’ve trained their eyes can spot them. Anchors aren’t guaranteed to be in the ideal place and therefore anchor extensions and changes of directions are part of artful rigging… but sometimes Gearheads hear a whisper and feel the rumble of a perfectly placed Pebbs and Hunky Hold locking into place that makes things easy. Most people call it lucky to find such a great anchor point, but Gearheads know better.
